Trends for Trendy Mamas

Everyday you hear about a new trend in child care and you think, damn it, how did I miss that? I wanted to share with you, adventurous new mothers and mother-to-be's, a couple of things you may not heard of but may want to consider...

1. Teaching your baby sign language
Babies cry, whine and get frustrated and as parents most of the time you really don't know what's going on. Is he hungry? Does he have pain? Does he need to be changed? The idea behind sign language is that you teach your baby the sign for simple and useful words and and they start communicating with you in sign language before they start talking....

Here's a very well-done website. They even have a dictionary and a video clip that goes with every word.

Did I do it? I felt like he was already telling me what he wanted with his own gestures and sounds it was up to me to decipher them. But yeah, did I decipher? No...but I'm working on it. I know of some friends who have successfully done the sign language. If you don't believe, here's a cute video of a 6 month-old using the sign language.

2. Potty training your baby
The idea behind potty training your baby is that instinctually no baby wants to pee or poop on himself, just like other animals. And unfortunately we kind of force them to do that by using diapers. So you train your babies from very early on to pee and poop in the potty.

Here are two interesting links for brave mamas:

And also for Turkish speakers only, a wonderful blog, and the entry of a mother who uses this technique:

As the mother of a social pooper (i.e., won't poop unless you talk him into it), I believe this is true...What did people do before Pampers, right?? I would have liked to try this if he was not going to daycare.

3. Baby led weaning
The idea behind baby led weaning is that children can feed themselves proper food if you just hand them the food. So you don't do mashed anything...Here's the link: http://www.babyledweaning.com/

I believe it's important for babies to know what they are eating looks like and smells like. But since I have a strong chocking anxiety, I was not very motivated to hand him things.  Plus he doesn't naturally put things in his mouth (I know, weird!). What I did though was to hand him whatever he was going to eat. For instance, I handed him a whole carrot to play with, before he was eating carrots. But again, I have friends who love this. I don't blame them, this would have saved so much of my time.

4. Baby classes
There are classes out there for both babies and mothers like mom and baby yoga or fitness classes, and also only for babies like bébé nageur (swimmer babies) or Pekip (thanks Mai-Ni), naked babies in a hot room, playing around. It's a good way to get out of the house, do a fun activity together and socialize with other mothers.

Did I do any? I really wanted but no! Should you do it? Yes and let me know how it goes....

  1. 1. Did/doing baby sign language with both. I feel like it did/does help... less frustration it seems. Eli only knows 2-3 signs (milk, eat, all done)
    2. Isa never put things in her mouth. Eli puts EVERYTHING in his mouth. Isa would eat mashed foods. Eli will ONLY eat what Isa and us are eating, therefore he gets whole foods (and chokes seldomly) all the time.
    3. Potty training. Isa started at about 20 months. Eli, frankly, I'm not home enough to know :(. So sad! He seems fine in diapers. Isa started pulling them off when they got dirty. Then we knew it was time.
    4. I just play with my babies. I went to a few classes, and found them... uninspiring. i'd rather roll around in a park, or go on a bike ride...
    5. Can't wait to play in a park with you guys!

    1. 1. 2-3 signs might help a lot I'm sure. I think I would have liked to have milk, poop, and pain, which pretty much sums up my life :)

      2. Thank you so much for sharing that on Isa. I really thought there was something wrong with him. And I laughed to your comment about "chokes seldomly" and thought how can she be so cool about it, then I thought, she is a doctor, I'm sure you've seen much worse.

      3. Ugh, yes, you are a doctor for sure...re: not being home enough...

      4. And I can't wait to roll around with you ;)

  2. Insert sarcastic mom response here:
    1. Sign language. Great! Until your 2 year old refuses to talk and only signs "more" or grunts to get what s/he wants (true story, my friend's baby does this and it's no bueno. Full disclosure: he also used a pacifier until 3 years old which doesn't facilitate expressive language)
    2. Potty training your baby. Say goodbye to leaving your house or having a life without the threat of baby poop/pee making an appearance on someone's floors. Yeah, I'm training my baby to be potty trained, please excuse the shit on the floor. Here's a baby wipe.
    3. Baby led weaning. It appears easier and cheaper than baby food and is hence, an easy sell for a "method", I call shenanigans!
    4. Baby classes. Bah! Dirty babies together being dirty, SARS! SARS! EVERYWHERE! (Note: We may have stopped talking about SARS, but its there, lurking, waiting for us. I think I saw it at IKEA the other day).

For my real opinion, we're sort of half assing a baby led weaning method. Basically, we let Nina eat our food, but she also gets mashed up veggies (cooked with olive oil, garlic and love!). And I'm planning on going old skool with potty training, aka when she's ready, she'll let us know and we'll go from there. Per classes, oh, we are doing swimming lessons ABSOLUTELY. Other than that, I'm not interested. Sign language just isn't something we thought about, maybe with the next one!

    1. 1. :)))Hahaha!! I never heard of that but yes it makes sense, if they express themselves in one way (signs) why bother with the other way (sounds??)

      2. :)))) YES, it came to my mind as well. There was this mom giving an interview with her baby on potty training and I thought how funny would it be if the baby poops right now...

      3. Yes, what's that all "now buy our book and our CD and our t-shirts, and click to go to our store" thing!

      4. LOL!!!

I'm so jealous you're doing swimming lesson. Our excuse for not doing it was that it was cold and he was getting sick all the time! How does NIna like it? How do YOU like it?
